Our Story

Slate was founded by Blair and Brady Welch in 2005 because they saw an opportunity to create a real estate-focused asset manager with a fresh perspective.

From its initial portfolio of Canadian office properties, Slate has expanded its footprint across North America and Europe with exposure to multiple asset classes that are part of a variety of investment strategies.

Commercial real estate was becoming dominated by investors who had never owned or operated real estate. Too often, they treated real estate as a cash flow stream similar to a fixed income security. Today Slate manages and co-invests in assets exceeding $6.5 billion. Our team includes 90 professionals, each of whom brings their unique point of view and experience to bear helping our tenants and investors reach their goals.

Slate today has multiple capital sources from institutional and pension fund investment partners, private equity, family offices and public markets. We are highly transactional, having successfully launched public listings, completed public-to-private takeovers, and executed on public and private mergers and acquisitions. As a participant in every investment strategy, Slate has demonstrated the embedded value in building real estate portfolios organically, often one asset at a time.

We look for opportunities to own buildings for less than it would cost to build them. That reduces risk, protects capital and increases returns.

As markets shift and capital flows into the latest hot spots in the market, we can shift our themes to take advantage.

As responsible owners and operators, we believe it’s our duty to ensure our properties increasingly embrace sustainable management and design. It’s the right thing to do for our environment, and we know it is important to tenants, partners and investors.


Slate focuses its sustainability efforts in three areas:

    Investing in renewable energy and LEED certifications for our buildings
  • Operational
    Enacting green lease clauses for all of our buildings, which create incentives for landlords and tenants to pursue sustainability goals together
  • Community
    Encouraging property managers to treat their building environments with consideration and wellbeing of our neighbours in mind
